Air cleaners and manifolds are combined to form complete intake systems which
reduce noise and exhaust emissions as well as fuel consumption, while increasing
both engine output and torque.
To reach these objectives, the overall development
responsibility must be in one hand. The technology
of the future is based on variable intake manifolds
that either improve combustion with the help of swirl
or tumble flaps, or increase power and torque by way
of resonance or variable-length oscillating pipe systems.
More and more, drivers are demanding a sporty engine
sound, especially on high-performance vehicles. MAHLE
is developing special sound
generators to this end.
